Several lanes were closed on Lake Shore Drive during rush hour Monday afternoon after pavement on the roadway began buckling.
The first lane closures were reported on southbound Lake Shore Drive near 31st Street, causing major traffic delays in the area.
The Chicago Department of Transportation said crews closed all but one lane near the 31st Street exit for "a pavement buckle due to the heat."
The lanes remained closed for more than two hours before reopening just after 7 p.m.
More lane closures then began on northbound Lake Shore Drive before 39th Street for what appeared to be a similar situation.
Separately, police said three northbound lanes were also closed at Chicago for a stalled Chicago Transit Authority bus.
