Police: Beach Park Man Dies After Son Stabs Him With Garden Shears

The man's son has been charged with first degree murder in the death

A 70-year-old man died Friday after his son allegedly stabbed him with a pair of garden shears Thursday at their Beach Park home.

George W. Bryce, 21, was initially charged with attempted first degree murder for the attack about 3 p.m. in the 12900 block of Peacock Road in Beach Park, according to the Lake County sheriff’s office, but his charges were upgraded to first-degree murder after his father's death.

Bryce was involved in a “domestic-related incident” with his 70-year-old father when he grabbed the shears and stabbed his father repeatedly, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies arrived to find the man on the floor with multiple sharp-force injuries, authorities said. He was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan, where he was pronounced dead at 1:28 p.m. Friday.

Lake County Associate Judge Paul D. Novak ordered Bryce held on $2 million bail during a hearing Friday on the attempted murder charge, according to the Lake County state’s attorney’s office. His next court date was set for July 23.

The sheriff’s office said additional charges are pending following his father’s death. The case is being investigated as a homicide.

If Bryce is able to post bond, he will be prohibited from having any contact with witnesses in the case or possessing weapons, using drugs or drinking alcohol, prosecutors said.
