A man who spent a quarter of a century behind bars for a crime he didn't commit has some vindication.
Alton Logan said he was a victim of controversial Chicago police Commander Jon Burge, who has been accused of torturing suspects into false confessions. He spent 26 years in prison for the 1982 slaying of Lloyd Wickliffe, a security guard at a South Side McDonald’s restaurant. A judge ordered his release on bond a year ago after two attorneys revealed that a former client had confessed to fatally shooting the guard.
Logan on Friday was granted a certificate of innocence and compensation for his years in prison.
"This is not a time for anger. This is a joyous time. I've now got my life where I can live again," Logan said during a press conference Friday.
The certificate makes Logan eligible for employment assistance and $200,000 in restitution.
