Woman Dies After Hunger Strike in Jail

Lyvita Gomes began the hunger strike last month, according to reports

A 52-year-old woman died this week in Vista Medical Center-East after a hunger strike she started in Lake County Jail.

Lyvita Gomes, whose last known address was the Homestead Studio Suites in Vernon Hills, died Tuesday of malnutrition and dehydration, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Gomes, whose autopsy showed no signs of disease or drug use, reportedly stopped eating shortly after she was arrested in mid-December.

Gomes was brought in on a Lake County warrant for resisting arrest but was later turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement due to an immigration hold, according to the Tribune.

Officials are trying to locate family members of Gomes.
