Woman Attacked On NW Indiana Bike Path

Police are looking for a man who assaulted a woman on a Gary bike path Tuesday.

The 27-year-old woman was riding her bike on the trail near 51st Avenue and Interstate 65 shortly after noon when a man on a bike approached her near a tunnel.

"He bumped her bike, she fell off her bike. What she's telling us is that he tried to sexually assault her," Gary police Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

The man fled the scene after stealing the woman's cell phone, police say.

The victim was treated and released from a local hospital.

"It's definitely alarming and kind of nerve wracking," said Madeline Huff, who lives near the bike path. "It's very calm, you have older people running, biking, there's kids riding bikes with their parents ... this is a calm area."

Police say patrols will be stepped up in the area. The victim was not able to get a detailed description of her attacker.

"Even though it's daytime and you're on a bike trail, if at all possible don't ride alone, ride with somebody else," King said.
