A Batavia High School student was killed and another one critically injured after their car slid off the road and hit a tree near west suburban Elburn.
Lynlee Gilbert, 17, of Batavia was driving a 1989 Dodge down Green Road near clover Hill Road when the vehicle veered off the road and struck a tree around 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Kane County Sheriff's Department.
When emergency crews arrived, they had to extricate both occupants out of the vehicle.
Gilbert was pronounced dead at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva, officials said.
The passenger, 18-year-old Sarah Ginter, also of Batavia, was taken to Delnor in critical condition, according to officials.
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
