Police: Shooter Fleeing Scene Causes Fatal Crash

A man being chased by police following a shooting on Chicago’s west side caused a fatal accident as he slammed into two cars and a CTA bus Saturday, police said.

Police were pursuing the man after he allegedly shot a person in the 100 block of Springfield Avenue when he crashed into two cars at the intersection of Pulaski Road and Chicago Avenue about a mile away.

One of the cars hit then struck a CTA bus.

A 34-year-old woman was killed in the crash and pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. Her identity has not yet been released, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

Five others were injured in the accident, including the suspect, police said.

The suspect is in custody and was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. The other victims were transported area hospitals.

A 38-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the shooting prior to the crash, police said.

Charges were pending as of Sunday morning.
