Parts of Cook County Jail Quarantined After Stomach Virus Outbreak

36 inmates in four divisions came down with a stomach virus, prompting the quarantine

Four divisions of the Cook County Jail are in quarantine after 36 inmates came down with a stomach virus.

A total of 3,650 inmates are housed in the quarantined divisions, which include both minimum security and maximum security cells.

The living and dining areas in the four divisions, as well as the shower, toilet and other surfaces, are being regularly disinfected, and linens are being changed and washed separately to combat the spread of the virus, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

No jail officers have shown signs of the virus, but they are being monitored closely to prevent it spreading outside the jail, officials said.

Friends and family of inmates can check the inmate locator on CookCountySheriff.org to find out if their loved ones live in one of the affected divisions. The quarantine is currently in place in Divisions II, III-Annex, VIII and X.
