Officials Warn of Potential Salmonella Exposure at Clearing Grocery Store

Public health officials are warning people who recently bought pork products from the deli section of a Clearing grocery store that they may have been exposed to salmonella after four confirmed cases of the infection in July.

Customers who purchased pork tamales or carnitas since July 1 from the deli section at Sun View Produce, 6110 W. 63rd St., may have been exposed to the bacteria, according to the Chicago Department of Public Health. Shoppers who purchased these items since July 1 and have them in their freezer are advised to throw them away.

As of August 5, the contaminated food items are no longer available at the store and there is no evidence that food made after this date poses a risk, officials said. CDPH is working with the store to provide guidance on safe food handling and cleaning practices to prevent further spread of the disease.

Salmonella symptoms – which include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps – usually last four-to-seven days and most people recover without any treatment, CDPH said. If you have experienced any of these symptoms after eating foods from this store, contact the CDPH at 312-746-7425 to file a suspected food poisoning complaint.
