Mother Of Dead 7-Month-Old Held On $250K

Mother faces one count of felony child endangerment and two misdemeanors

The mother of a baby who died after being found in a West Side apartment with only her young siblings is being held on $250,000 bail.

Erica Hampton, 25, was charged Thursday and faces one count of felony child endangerment and two misdemeanors.

Prosecutors said 7-month-old Lamya Hampton died in part from dehydration and overheating. A neighbor found the baby girl unresponsive Wednesday after her 6-year-old sister went next door to ask for food. A 2-year-old girl also was in the apartment, located at 3729 W. 13th Street.

The baby was wrapped in a blanket and snowsuit and lying in a car seat. An autopsy showed she had a high body temperature. Initial reports that the baby had frozen to death were not accurate, but authorities said the apartment was unheated when they found the children.

Hampton's public defender said she's a warehouse worker who's the sole supporter of her children.
