A 49-year-old man died after being rescued from Lake Michigan on Chicago's North Side Sunday morning, police said.

The man was swimming in the 5200 block of North Simonds Drive near Foster Beach when he "experienced trouble" and went under, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada.

A witness called 911 and Chicago Fire Department crews pulled the man out of the water around 8:30 a.m.

Fire crews located the man at the bottom of the lake in about 10 feet of water, Dorneker said.

He was taken in critical condition to Weiss Memorial Hospital, where was pronounced dead, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
