Lombard Misses Mark For ‘Most Fun' Small Town Award

Rand McNally survey awards title to small New York community

Lombard isn't the most fun small town in America after all, according to a contest sponsored by Rand McNally.

The Skokie-based map company instead gave the title to Corning, N.Y.,  in its 2013 "Best of the Road" program.

Rand McNally set out in search of the best small towns in America at the beginning of the summer. Nominations were accepted between July 1 and Sept. 3 for a variety of categories, including most beautiful, most patriotic and best for food.

After the finalists were announced in September, Lombard was asked to submit a video tour explaining why it deserved to win its category. Residents were also encouraged to use social media as a promotion tool.

Despite the loss, Lombard is still feeling good about its status as a fun place.

"Congrats to Corning, NY on the 'Most Fun' win," village officials tweeted Tuesday. "Thanks to everyone who tweeted during the contest. We still think Lombard is the #MostFun!"

Illinois didn't go completely unrecognized during this year's contest. Kewanee was dubbed the friendlest town, beating out communities in Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and Iowa. It will receive a free custom iPhone app and online travel guide developed by Rand McNally, as well as coverage in the company's 2015 Road Atlas.
