Chicago Tentatively Settles Lawsuit Over Police Shooting of Innocent Woman: Report

The city of Chicago has tentatively settled a lawsuit with a 55-year-old woman’s family after she was killed by a Chicago police officer who was shooting at a teenaged suspect holding a baseball bat.

The incident occurred in Dec. 26 of 2015 around 4:30 a.m. when Officer Robert Rialmo responded with his partner to a domestic disturbance call in the 4700 block of West Erie Street. Bettie Jones lived above Quintonio LeGrier who was 19 years old. Rialmo was headed up a flight of stairs when LeGrier came toward him with the bat. The officer moved backward down the stairs and fired his weapon at LeGrier eight times. LeGrier was shot six times and Jones, who was standing behind LeGrier, was struck once in the chest.

The state’s attorney’s office declined at the time to press charges against Rialmo.

The Chicago Tribune obtained a copy of an order signed by a judge that the Jones’ lawsuit “has been settled by agreement of the parties.”

A separate lawsuit brought by LeGrier’s family is still scheduled and could see jury selection as early as Monday.
