Robbers Force 81-Year-Old Woman to Drive to Bank, Withdraw Money

An 81-year-old woman was the victim of a harrowing robbery on Chicago’s North Side Saturday afternoon, according to police.

Officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of West Barry Avenue in the city’s Lake View neighborhood at around 7 p.m. after the woman reported the robbery to a family member, Chicago police said.

The victim said the incident began at around 12:30 p.m. in Lincoln Park, according to police, when she was approached by a man and a woman in the 2600 block of North Clybourn Avenue.

The pair “engaged her in conversation and requested assistance,” officials said. All three then entered the victim’s vehicle, where the man subsequently implied that he was armed and demanded she withdraw money from her bank account, according to Chicago police.

Authorities said the woman drove to the 3200 block of North Lincoln Avenue in Roscoe Village, where she entered a bank alone while the offenders waited outside.

She withdrew cash and gave it to the man, according to police, at which point both offenders fled the scene on foot.

The victim was not injured in the robbery, officials said. No one is in custody in connection with the incident, and an investigation remains ongoing.
