2 Dead After 4-Car Crash on South Side: Authorities

Two people died Monday night after a four-vehicle crash on Chicago’s South Side when police were chasing a vehicle and it blew a red light, authorities said.

Fire officials originally reported seven people, including an infant and a child, were rushed to area hospitals in serious to critical condition. Multiple ambulances responded to West 69th Street and South Loomis Boulevard in the city’s Englewood neighborhood sometime after 7 p.m. The ages of the victims were not immediately available but many of them were transported in critical condition to various hospitals in the area.

According to Chicago police, two cars, headed west on 69th Street, were waiting for the light to change, when another vehicle headed east on the same street struck another car going north on Loomis Boulevard. The northbound vehicle then crashed into the two cars waiting for the light, police said.

"(The) offending driver ran away," the Chicago Fire Department said on Twitter.

Witnesses told NBC 5 they were devastated that one of the drivers ran away from the scene — leaving a baby lying in the street.

"Regardless if you’re in the wrong or not, you don’t just leave your child out there like roadkill," witness Nicole Brewer said. "Even if it was your fault, you should’ve stayed there with your baby."

Police say the man they're looking for was travelling alone. They said they found a handgun and two shell casings in the car he was driving.
