1 Killed in 4-Vehicle Crash That Shut Down Inbound Kennedy

At least one person was killed and another injured in a four-vehicle crash that shut down lanes on the inbound Kennedy Expressway near Harlem Avenue during Friday’s morning rush.

The crash occurred at 7:38 a.m. on inbound I-90 near Harlem on the Northwest Side, according to the Illinois State Police.

Fire Media Affairs spokesman Jeff Lyle described the accident as a pin-in crash and said two people were initially injured.

A preliminary investigation revealed a purple Dodge Caravan was traveling southbound in the far right lane on the expressway at Harlem Avenue when the vehicle collided with a White Ford, forcing the ford to hit a blue Chevrolet Cruze. The Chevrolet Cruze then struck a purple Ford Explorer.

All three vehicles except for the purple Dodge Caravan were stopped at the time of the collision, police said.

The driver of the purple Dodge Caravan was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge in serious condition, and later died, according to Illinois State Police.

The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze was taken to Presence Resurrection Medical Center in fair condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash closed all lanes on southbound I-90 at Harlem Avenue. The two right lanes were closed as of 8:15 a.m. and were expected to remain closed for hours, police said.
