Learn more about the elite wheelchair racers competing at the 2017 Chicago Marathon.

Chicago's most decorated male athlete Kurt Fearnley is next on the list of elite wheelchair athletes competing in the 2017 Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Here are some highlights from his career:

Name: Kurt Fearnley

Country of Origin: Australia

Standout Race: Fearnley took his first Paralympic gold medal in the Men's Marathon at the 2004 Games in Athens despite puncturing one of his tires during the event. At the 2016 Bank of America Chicago Fearnley, the defending champion, finished second in a photo finish against Marcel Hug. "It was a crazy finish," Hug said. "I never [had] that close finish ever. It was so close."

More About Kurt Fearnley: Fearnley was born with sacral agenesis, which left him with only the upper part of his spine and little hope to live. More than defy the odds, Fearnley has gone on to thrive with 11 Paralympic medals (three gold), seven appearances at the World Championships and 35 career marathon wins out of 54 competitions.
