2 Seriously Hurt After Shooting on City's South Side

A man was shot during a verbal altercation, and a woman was caught in the crossfire

Two people were seriously hurt in a shooting just a block away from Chicago’s Rainbow Beach Park on the city’s South Side Thursday afternoon.

According to police, a 21-year-old man was standing on a sidewalk in the 2800 block of East 77th Street at approximately 4 p.m. when he got into a verbal altercation with a group of men standing across the street.

During the altercation, one of the men opened fire, striking the man in the back, according to police.

The man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he is listed in serious condition.

Another victim, a 39-year-old woman, was walking down the sidewalk while the incident was taking place, and she was shot in both legs after being caught in the crossfire, police said.

Police say that the group of men fled the scene on South Shore Drive, and no suspects are in custody at this time. Area South Detectives are continuing to investigate the shooting.
