Two men died after being struck by a Metra train near west suburban Cicero early Tuesday, police said.

The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe line train No. 1299 was on its way to Aurora when it hit the men at about 11:50 p.m. as it neared the Cicero station, Metra spokesman Michael Gillis told the Chicago Sun-Times. It is not known why they were on the tracks.

A 30-year-old man died on the scene, according to the Chicago Tribune, and another man, 53, was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition. He later died.

Police searched for a possible third injured person, but didn't find anyone, News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Train No. 1299, scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 12:55 a.m., was canceled, and Train No. 1325 was delayed by one hour.
