Living La Vida Verde

No, it's not a Ricky Martin remake

River North's Greenheart Shop is an eco-aware, fair-trade nonprofit store that stocks an array of earth-friendly products -- everything from clothing, accessories and beauty products to home goods, glassware and gourmet treats.

In addition, Greenheart Shop, which is a branch of the global Greenheart Initiative and the Center for Cultural Interchange,  regularly hosts events to educate and entertain while staying true to the green lifestyle.

Greenheart will present "Living La Vida Verde: Living the Green Life for the Chicago Urbanite," a free all-day affair celebrating Earth Month on Saturday, April 25.

The earth-honoring activities will include a clean-up of Ohio Street Beach from 10 a.m.-12 p.m., where you can do your part in keeping our lakefront clean along with the Alliance for the Great Lakes.

Workshops at Greenheart Shop will include a fair-trade and organic coffee and tea tasting (10-11 a.m.), a green smoothie-making demo (11 a.m-12 p.m.), a cooking lesson featuring local and organic produce (12:30-1:30PM), a seminar on energy efficiency ideas (2-3:30PM) and a guide to Chicago's top socially and environmentally responsible businesses (4-5:30 p.m). Don't miss out on free samples of fair-trade chocolates, organic fair-trade wines and local beers throughout the day.

Reward your hard work and open mind at the nearby nightspot Avila (203 W. Superior St.) from 6-9 p.m.

DJ C-Dub will spin globally influenced beats at this all-ages party, and a theatrical performance combining video art, music and live performance by director Elizabeth Margoliu will commemorate Earth Month.
