Anyone needing to head out on the roadways Monday night is urged to take extra caution.
Authorities reported several accidents due to black ice on city streets and Lake Shore Drive. At one point, access to Lake Shore Drive between E. Pershing Road and E. Hayes Drive, on the South Side, was closed to traffic.
The Illinois Department of Transportation also reported several accidents along the major expressways in the area.
Chicago's Department of Streets and Sanitation called up 174 snow-fighting trucks to patrol main streets, including Lake Shore Drive.
While snow is expected to continue to be light overnight, temperatures are well below freezing and caused the roadways to be slick.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until Tuesday morning.
