CityArts Doles Out $1 Million in Grants

Over 275 groups receive funds

As we lose some of media's greatest giants this week, we are reminded of the incredible impact the arts have on our lives. No matter our backgrounds or beliefs, we express ourselves and connect with others via TV, art, film, theater, dance, and music.

In the days to come, we shall reflect upon the contributions that recently deceased famous names have given us. They will most certainly inspire current and future artists and performers.

And so, at this especially appropriate time, Mayor Daley has announced that the City of Chicago will award CityArts grants totaling $1 million to 277 arts and cultural organizations.

Art houses, theatres, dance groups, museums, and more received amounts ranging in size from $1,000 to $8,000 by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

"Arts organizations supported by CityArts grants employ thousands of artists, designers and musicians, all of whom help make Chicago the most vibrant, exciting city in which to live, work and visit," said Daley.

The Chicago Gay Men's Chorus, Chinese Fine Arts Society, Chicago Children's Choir, Ensemble Español, and the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art are just a few of this year's recipients.

And who knows? These grants could very well help inspire the next Ed, Farrah, or Michael.

Matt Bartosik, editor of Off the Rocks' next issue, felt he lost an icon this week.
