Opponent Pitches in to Help Washington Football Team

In the midst of the tragedy comes an example of true sportsmanship.

Washington Community High School's undefeated football team is scheduled to play Springfield Sacred Heart in a state playoff game this weekend.

But Sacred Heart has decided to help the devastated team out, chartering six buses to bring the team and its fans to the game -- and then feed them all.

Their coach has also called on Springfield residents to take donations to the game, calling it a win for everyone, no matter the final score.

It's bigger than football, they're people just like us, they're not just a football team, they're not just a jersey and a helmet, they're actual people," Sacred Heart player Tim Zock said.

The homes of seven players, coaches and teachers were leveled, but many of the players were out in the community Monday, chipping in with the recovery effort.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly identified the high school as Washington Central High School.
