Jake Arrieta Named National League Player of the Week

Chicago Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta has been the most dominant player in baseball since the All-Star break, and he was honored once again Monday for his great performances of late when he was named the National League Player of the Week.

Arrieta, who won his 21st game of the season and lowered his season ERA to 1.82 with a Sunday victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, is right on track for both the NL Cy Young and MVP awards. His continued dominance has also helped the Cubs to clinch their first postseason berth since the 2008 season.

In two starts last week, Arrieta pitched a combined 16 innings while giving up just four hits and no earned runs. He tossed a complete game shutout against the MIlwaukee Brewers in a Tuesday masterpiece for his 20th win. Against the Pirates on Sunday he pitched seven shutout innings and carried a perfect game into the top of the seventh inning before it was broken up by a single off the bat of Gregory Polanco.

Arrieta will likely get one more start before the playoffs begin for the Cubs, as he’s scheduled to start on Friday night against the Brewers at Miller Park. The hurler is also in line to get the start in the National League wild card game, which the Cubs will contest against either the Pirates or the St. Louis Cardinals on Oct. 7.
