Cubs Hire Ramirez, Youkilis as Consultants, Establish Mental Skills Program

Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein has never been shy about bringing players and coaches from his tenure with the Boston Red Sox to the north side, and on Tuesday he continued that trend as the Cubs announced they’d hired Manny Ramirez and Kevin Youkilis as consultants.

According to the team, Ramirez will serve as a hitting consultant in the organization, and Youkilis will perform scouting duties and will be involved in player development.

The Cubs also announced that they had formed a new mental skills program, helmed by sports psychologist Dr. Ken Ravizza. According to the team, Ravizza has worked with manager Joe Maddon since the 1980’s, and he has also worked with several other teams throughout the sports world, including the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New York Jets.

The hire of Ramirez by the Cubs doesn’t come as much of a surprise, considering that the team hired him last year to essentially serve as a mentor for Javier Baez with the team’s triple-A affiliate in Des Moines. Ramirez also appeared in 24 games for the Iowa Cubs, hitting three home runs and driving in 10 RBI while hitting just .222 with the team.

Even with his struggles there, Ramirez still has not officially retired from baseball, but with moves like this, it wouldn’t be shocking to see that happen at some point in the near future.

As for Youkilis, he will focus his scouting efforts on northern California, according to the Cubs. In his playing career, which ended in 2013, Youkilis hit 150 home runs and racked up an impressive .382 on-base percentage thanks to his keen eye at the plate. With the Cubs featuring a slew of young sluggers who prefer to swing for the fences to taking pitches and working counts, Youkilis could be a smart addition as a consultant to work with those players.
