Smoke Reported at Radio City Music Hall

Fire crews were sent to Radio City Music Hall Friday after receiving reports of smoke in the iconic New York City venue's basement, the FDNY says.

Crews got a call about smoke about 8:30 p.m., the fire department says. The exact cause of the smoke is unknown, but crews think a transformer that caught fire underground nearby might be to blame. Heavy smoke could be seen pouring through a sidewalk grate from the street.

The smoke was brought under control about 10:45 p.m., firefighters say. The building was evacuated, but no shows were scheduled at the venue Friday.

A representative for Con Ed said there was a manhole fire at 51st Street and Sixth Avenue and smoke from a nearby transformer vault. That fire is thought to have been caused by the combination of melting ice and salt.

The FDNY and Con Ed will be investigating the incident together.
