A Mexican woman considered a drug cartel queen is seeking release from a U.S. jail after pleading guilty to federal charges in Miami.
The attorney for 52-year-old Sandra Avila Beltran asked a judge on Friday to give her time served. Avila has been jailed since her 2007 arrest in Mexico. After her extradition to the U.S. in 2012, she pleaded guilty in April to helping her former boyfriend evade arrest between 2002 and 2004.
The former boyfriend, Juan Diego Espinosa Ramirez, was a liaison between Mexico's Sinaloa cocaine cartel and Colombia's Norte Valle cartel. He pleaded guilty in 2009 to cocaine trafficking charges.
Avila, known in Mexico as the "Queen of the Pacific," faces a maximum of 15 years in prison at her sentencing hearing set for July 25.
