35,000 Walruses Come Ashore in Alaska

An estimated 35,000 Pacific walruses were photographed Saturday as they came ashore near an Eskimo village in Alaska, The Associated Press reported. The record number of walruses arrived in northwest Alaska after they couldn't find ice to rest on in the Arctic due to warming sea waters. The animals were spotted during the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, a spokeswoman for the agency said.
