1 in Custody After SWAT Response in Chicago's Jefferson Park Neighborhood

One man is in custody after SWAT teams engaged in an hours-long barricade situation on Chicago's Northwest Side Saturday night, according to police.

Officers responded to the situation in the 4800 block of North Milwaukee in the city's Jefferson Park neighborhood around 9:15 p.m., according to police, who warned the public to stay away from the area.

SWAT was called in when a man barricaded himself inside a store with two other people, police said. Around 1 a.m., SWAT entered the building and arrested the man, according to police. The two people inside were unharmed.

As a precaution, Blue Line trains did not stop at the Jefferson Park stop for the duration of the incident, according to the CTA.

Police initially said charges were pending against the suspect, but upon further review, authorities said he may have a mental disability and was undergoing a mental evaluation on Sunday morning.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
