Salvation Army Red Kettles Collect $2 Million

Donations to red kettles also pay for year-round programs for the homeless, hungry and families in crisis

The Salvation Army said Tuesday its red kettle campaign collected more than $2 million in donations in northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana during the holidays.

In a news release, the charity said it achieved its Christmas campaign goal and collected, in total, more than $15 million. That includes major gifts and material donations such as toys, coats and food.

Salvation Army's metropolitan division includes Chicago, Rockford and northwest Indiana. The division said it provided 168,000 food baskets during the holiday season and 131,000 toys.

Donations to red kettles also pay for year-round programs for the homeless, hungry and families in crisis.
