Cops: Two in Custody After Brazen Nordstrom Purse Thefts

Getaway car crashed into cars, witnesses say

Two people are in custody, police said, after a brazen mid-day robbery left smashed cars on Grand Avenue.

Chicago Police say the incident started around 10 a.m. at the Louis Vuitton store inside the Nordstrom Shopping Center when at least two people grabbed several high-end purses and took off.

"We're working closely with the Chicago Police Department as they investigate this situation," said Emily Sterken, spokeswoman for Nordstrom. "As that investigation is ongoing, we aren't able to share any additional details. Our store remains open to customers."

Police caught up with the getaway car two blocks away near Grand Avenue and Dearborn Street.

Krisha Fernandes, the manager of the India House restaurant said she saw the events unfold.

“They hit the cab, then they hit the black car, then they lost control and the guys just ran out of the car,” Fernandes said.

A witness at the nearby Aloft Hotel said guests were startled to see the thieves run through alleys. The area is heavy with car and foot traffic.

“We were afraid, too, because we thought maybe they would run in here,” Fernandes said.
