Heyward Plays Hero as the Cubs Sweep the Cardinals

The Chicago Cubs got a clutch hit from Jason Heyward in the seventh inning, and Wade Davis slammed the door as they completed a sweep over the St. Louis Cardinals.

With the win, the Cubs' magic number to clinch the National League Central has now dropped to just 10, and they now own a six-game lead over the Cardinals in the division race.

Jose Quintana gave up three earned runs in five and two-thirds innings of work, and the Cubs' bullpen did the rest as they pitched shutout ball the rest of the way.

Ben Zobrist picked up two RBI in the game, including an RBI single in the fourth inning. Kyle Schwarber also drove in a run for the Cubs as he clubbed his 27th home run of the season on an opposite field blast to left field.

Former Cub Dexter Fowler tied things up with a three-run home run off of Quintana in the top of the sixth inning, but Heyward saved the day. The outfielder laced an RBI single into left field in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Anthony Rizzo and giving the Cubs the go-ahead run.

From there, Brian Duensing and Davis combined to keep the Cardinals off the board and helped the Cubs to a series sweep over their bitter rivals.

The Cubs will have Monday off before starting a two-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on Tuesday. The Milwaukee Brewers, who now trail the Cubs by four games, will now head to Pittsburgh for a series against the Pirates.
