Cubs, White Sox Players Among Finalists for Gold Glove Awards

Rawlings announced its nominees for the Gold Glove Awards on Thursday afternoon, and Chicago was well-represented as numerous players have been chosen as finalists for the prestigious defensive trophies.

For the Chicago Cubs, they have four players who will be vying for the coveted hardware when the World Series finishes up. Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta will be trying to win his first Gold Glove this fall, and he’ll have some big-time competition as he’ll go against St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright and Arizona Diamondbacks hurler Zack Greinke.

At first base, the Cubs will have another finalist for the award as Anthony Rizzo was recognized for his contributions to the team’s tremendous infield defense. He’ll be going up against San Diego Padres infielder Wil Myers and Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who has won the award twice, including after the 2015 season.

Cubs shortstop Addison Russell was nominated as a finalist for the Gold Glove at shortstop, but the slick fielding infielder will have a ton of competition here. San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford, largely viewed as one of the top fielders in the game, was also nominated, as was Philadelphia Phillies star Freddy Galvis.

Jason Heyward rounded out the Cubs' quartet of finalists, as he was nominated for the right fielder award on Thursday. Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Braves right fielder Nick Markakis will be battling with him for the trophy.

The Chicago White Sox also had a finalist for an award, as right fielder Adam Eaton was rewarded for his excellent season with a nomination for a trophy. George Springer of the Houston Astros and Mookie Betts of the Boston Red Sox were also nominated for their efforts.
