Chicago Restaurant Named Best In World By Elite Traveler, 2 Others Make Top 100

A Chicago chef also was named the magazine's 2018 Rising Star

Three Chicago eateries made a list of the world’s top 100 restaurants.

After coming in second place last year, Alinea, located at 1723 N. Halsted St., took the top spot in the list by Elite Traveler, a luxury lifestyle magazine.

The top ranking marks yet another addition to the prestigious restaurant’s long list of accolades. It traded spaces with last year’s grand winner, Azurmendi in Larrabetzu, Spain.

Next, located at 953 W. Fulton Market, and Smyth and The Loyalist, at 177 N. Ada St., took 41st and 96th place, respectively. Next held its spot for the second year in a row, while Smyth and The Loyalist was a new entry.

Smyth and The Loyalist chef John Shields was also named Elite Traveler’s 2018 Rising Star. The eatery is a two-floor restaurant with different menus and kitchens.

The top floor is Smyth, featuring a menu comprised of five-, eight- and 12-course meals. The Loyalist is on the bottom floor with an a la carte menu and a cheeseburger called the “Dirty Burg” that last year made Bon Appetit’s shortlist of the three best burgers in the country, unseating local legend Au Cheval

Next, another restaurant from Alinea chef Grant Achatz, won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America in 2012. It revamps its entire menu every four months.
