The western suburb of North Riverside is under a boil order, according to a release from the village.
A major main water break on Cermak Road caused water pressure to drop "below acceptable limits" on Tuesday, officials said.
The boil order is in effect throughout the area between 1st Avenue and 19th Avenue, according to the village.
Residents are warned to not drink or cook with the water without boiling it for at least five minutes first.
Authorities said residents the boil order will remain in effect until further notice, and did not give an estimate as to when the village would give the all-clear.
