Woodridge Man Indicted in Weed Wacker Death

Prosecutors say the man struck his father several times with the weed trimmer as he slept on a futon

A Woodridge man who police say killed his father with a weed wacker was indicted Thursday by a DuPage County grand jury on five counts of first-degree murder.

Yashesh Desai, 21, faces a minimum 20- to 60-year sentence for allegedly beating Sanjiv Desai, 47, at the home they shared on Plover Court in Woodridge.

Prosecutors allege Desai struck his father several times with the weed trimmer as he slept on a futon.

Desai must undergo a psychological exam, per judge's orders, according to the Daily Herald. He was ordered held on $2 million bail in the slaying.

Woodridge police responded at 3:07 a.m. Aug. 14 to a 911 call from someone saying his brother had just killed their father, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin and Woodridge Police Chief Steve Herron.

When officers arrived, they found Sanjiv Desai lying on a futon in the Plover Court home's computer room.

The man suffered from "massive head wounds," Herron said. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital from severe trauma to his head.

“Sanjiv Desai’s life was tragically taken from him, allegedly by his own son,” Berlin said in a statement. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
