Woman Gives Birth to Baby in Stairwell in Schaumburg

The mother and baby were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates where they were “doing fine"

A woman gave birth in the stairwell of an apartment building in Schaumburg when she could no longer wait for an ambulance to take her to the hospital.

The Schaumburg Fire Department was responding to a fire in the 1400 block of Albany Court just before 8 a.m. Friday when, at the same time, they were called to assist with the emergency delivery of a baby in the stairwell of an apartment complex at 21 Kristin Place, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The department sent a crew to the apartment complex and paramedics from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village were also called to help, but by the time emergency personnel arrived, the baby was already born.

The mother and baby were taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates where they were “doing fine,” according to the Tribune.

The Bloch family says the baby is the couple's third child. They had gone to the hospital Thursday night, but were sent home when the mother, Miki, "wasn't progressing fast enough."

The father, Mike Bloch, said the couple called 911 and the baby arrived seconds later. The baby was named Tristan.

No injuries were reported in the fire. The cause is under investigation.
