West Nile Virus Detected in Will County

Will County mosquito samples test positive for West Nile virus

Will County has seen a recent spike in the West Nile virus, according to reports. The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed Wednesday the virus was detected in 12 mosquito samples collected from Will County during the second half of July.

A number of mosquito samples have tested positive in Bolingbrook, Homer Glen, Lockport, Crete, Naperville and Joliet, according to the Chicago Sun-Times

No human infections have been reported in Will County, but Cook County reported two human cases so far this summer.

Recent hot, dry weather may trigger the mosquito-borne illness, experts say. So far, Illinois has seen 36 days of 90-degree temperatures.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say West Nile now affects 42 states.

Experts say they have not seen this many cases since 2004.
