University of Chicago Among Most Expensive Colleges in U.S.

The University of Chicago's tuition was $47,514, according to statistics released by the U.S. Department of Education

One of the nation's priciest colleges resides right here in Chicago, according to national education statistics released this week.

The University of Chicago was listed as the sixth most expensive college or university in the country, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The cost of tuition at the university is $47,514, and enrollment is listed as 15,048, with 5,703 of those students enrolled in an undergraduate program.

Northwestern University also ranked closer to the top of the list, but it fell behind several other colleges and universities, coming in at No. 47. Tuition at Northwestern, whose main campus is in Evanston, is $45,527.

Forbes also named the University of Chicago the second most expensive college last year, behind Sarah Lawrence College.

When taking out private four-year colleges and universities, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also ranks high on the list of most expensive schools at No. 10, with a tuition price of $14,750. The most expensive four-year public school is the University of Pittsburgh, whose students pay $17,100 in tuition.

The statistics do not take into account the number of students who receive scholarships and, thus, pay far less in tuition, however.

Topping the U.S. Department of Education list is Landmark College in Vermont with a tuition price of $49,630, followed by Columbia University in New York, Sarah Lawrence College, Vassar College and Carnegie Mellon University.
