Travelers Flock to Chicago Airports to Leave Town for Memorial Day Weekend

One of the summer's busiest travel weekends kicked off Friday with the start of Memorial Day weekend.

Friday morning many Chicago travelers at O’Hare International Airport told NBC 5 they were arriving two to three hours ahead of their flights just to be prepared, but were surprised to find typically long security lines moving pretty smoothly.

According to the mayor’s office, as of May 22 new Transportation Security Administration resources have improved wait times.

The average wait time at TSA security checkpoints is 8 minutes at Chicago’s O’Hare and 9 minutes at Midway International Airport.

During peak times, the wait time are reported to sit at about 42 minutes at O’Hare and 44 minutes at Midway.

The lighter lines come after several frustrating weeks at Chicago airports where security lines took up to two hours to sit through due to TSA staffing problems.
