Suburban Middle School Student Hit by Vehicle While Leaving School: Officials

The incident happened “in plain view of many students who were having lunch in the cafeteria near the windows.”

A south suburban middle school student was hit by a vehicle after leaving her school’s premises without permission Thursday, school officials said.

The incident happened around noon outside of the Crete-Monee Middle School “in plain view of many students who were having lunch in the cafeteria near the windows.”

A school administrator accompanied the girl, who school officials say was 13 years old, to the hospital via ambulance for what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The school’s emergency plan was put into place after the incident and all regular scheduling resumed by 12:20 p.m., officials said.

“I have asked our school counselors and social workers to intervene and help students ‘process’ any feelings they may be having as a result of the incident,” the school’s principal, Kokona Chrisos, said in a note to parents.

It was not immediately clear why the student left the school.
