Storms Rake Chicago During Prolonged Chill

Parts of the city received more than a half-inch of rain

A slow-moving but expected line of storms dropped more than a half-inch of rain on parts of Chicago on Wednesday evening.

The deluge temporarily caused a delay at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs were taking on the Brewers in the last of a four-game series.

The storms were a part of a cold front drifting to the southeast.

During the 10 p.m. hour, the areas receiving the heaviest amounts of rain were in the south suburbs and northwest Indiana. Radar picked up evidence of hail in some of the storm cells.

The storms come at the tail end of a prolonged, unseasonable chill stretch that kept temperatures below 70 degrees. In contrast, parts of Alaska had temperatures in the low 80s.

The rest of the week was predicted to be warmer, though still below average. Models showed highs in the low 80s on Thursday with a slight chance for an isolated storm in the late afternoon and highs near 80 on Friday with scattered showers and storms later in the afternoon and evening.
