Palatine High School Student Struck By Car While Running

Student listed in serious condition Thursday afternoon

A suburban high school cross-country runner remained in serious condition Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while jogging earlier in the day with teammates.

Police said 18-year-old Ryan Kissane was crossing Palatine Road at Rohlwing at about 6:45 a.m. with other members of the Palatine High School Cross Country Team when he was struck by a 2000 Chevy Camaro.

According to an initial investigation, Kissane was jogging northbound in the crosswalk when the driver of the Camaro turned left from Rohlwing onto eastbound Palatine Road into the teen's path.

Kissane was knocked to the ground, police said, and suffered severe head trauma. He was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

The 39-year-old Palatine man driving the Camaro was not injured, police said. Witnesses told police the traffic light was green for Rohlwing Road at the time of the crash.

The driver was ticketed for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and cited for having an obstructed windshield due to frost impairing his view.
