Overnight Shooting Near NIU Campus

DeKalb Police are investigating a Wednesday night shooting near the Northern Illinois University campus.

A police source confirms someone was shot in the Village Commons Bookstore parking lot at 901 Lucinda Ave. That parking lot is near NIU’s Neptune West and Neptune North dormitories.

DeKalb Police say the shooting happened at 11:30 p.m. and did not involve students. Two people were in a car in the parking lot when the driver was shot in the leg.

The NIU Northern Star reports witnesses say the man was shot during an attempted mugging.

Police say the man, who is not a student at the university, was taken by ambulance to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. He has since been released.

A suspect is not yet in custody, though police say this was not a random act, that they all knew each other.
