Orland Park Man Recovers from Nail in Head

Surgeon removed a 3 1/2 inch nail from the man's head

An Orland Park man has quite the tale to tell. He had a nail lodged in his brain for more than a day and didn't even realize it.

Turns out Dante Autullo, 32, accidentally shot himself in the head with a nail gun Tuesday.

"My arm came down and the gun hit me in the head and pressed the pressure sensor and injected the nail into my brain," he told reporters at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

An X-ray showed the nail was lodged just millimeters away from the part of the brain that controls motor functions.

Autullo's mother, Jerri Autullo, told the Chicago Sun-Times the doctors were shocked because the nail was in his head for 36 hours.

Unaware of the nail in his brain, Autullo went about his day as usual. He even plowed snow that day.

It wasn't until he woke up nauseous after a nap on Wednesday that he went to the doctor to get it checked out.

It took a surgeon four hours to remove the nail from Autullo's head.
