A man was critically injured early Friday when his car crashed into a home in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the Far South Side.
Authorities responded to the crash at about 1 a.m. at a 1.5 story home in the 900 block of West 107th Street, said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
The man driving the car was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Langford said.
Five people were inside the building at the time of the crash, but no one was injured, according to residents who spoke with reporters at the scene.
"I was in bed sleeping, and I heard a whole lot of items on the shelf fall down," Donald Richard said.
Richard was inside the home with his daughter and grandchildren.
“You can’t believe it, it’s just unimaginable,” said Martha Richard, who came home to find the car crashed into her house. “The walls right to the bedroom, it looks like it could collapse at any time, at any time.”

Langford said the building’s structural integrity was likely not compromised.
“The house isn’t going to fall over,” he said. “The car just took some bricks out and the porch got ran over.”
The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.
