Man With Gun Arrested at Elgin Water Reclamation Center

An armed man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after reports he was attempting to shut down equipment at a water reclamation center in suburban Elgin.

Police received calls around 11:50 a.m. about a man with a gun at the Fox River Water Reclamation District at Raymond Street and Purify Drive. Callers reported a possible hostage situation at the plant.

Authorities from the Kane County Sheriff's Office and Elgin and South Elgin police departments responded to the scene and found the suspect armed with a handgun near the 875 building.

Elgin Police said officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect to have him surrender but the suspect refused. Officers used a "less lethal ammunition round to incapacitate him," police said.

He was taken into custody without further incident and transported to an area hospital.

Helicopter footage of the scene showed multiple police and SWAT vehicles lined up near the center, and a SWAT team was seen entering a building.

Fox River operates three wastewater treatment plants and one drinking water plant. It provides more than 26 million gallons of wastewater per day.
