Former Senate President Emil Jones Jr. Endorses Garcia

Jones was senate president from 2003 to 2009 and has been credited with advancing President Barack Obama’s political career

Jesus “Chuy” Garcia on Tuesday announced yet another major endorsement in his race to become the next mayor of Chicago.

Just one day after Rev. Jesse Jackson threw his support behind the Cook County Commissioner, former Illinois Senate President Emil Jones Jr. announced he too would back Garcia.

The move is another crucial step for Garcia as he works to secure the African American vote, who are seen as crucial in the April 7 runoff with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Jones was senate president from 2003 to 2009 and has been credited with advancing President Barack Obama’s political career. Obama has thrown his support behind Emanuel.

Garcia was also endorsed over the weekend by Rep. Danny Davis and by Teamsters Local 743, which endorsed Emanuel four years ago.
