Feds Bust Milwaukee Cocaine Smuggling Operation

Federal agents have disrupted a drug-dealing operation that allegedly smuggled cocaine to Milwaukee hidden inside metal elevator parts.

Citing court documents, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that the loads ranged as large as 130 pounds. The cocaine was sealed in elevator parts that were trucked from California to a Milwaukee warehouse. It took a metal-cutting torch to get the drugs out. Cash from sales was sealed back into elevator parts and returned to California.

A criminal complaint says two men were charged this month after agents found more than 30 pounds of cocaine in their car. The Journal Sentinel reports that Gilberto Hernandez-Ordunez, 34, and Alfredo Romo, 47, were charged based on information compiled from informants.

If convicted, they face at least 10 years in prison. One is free pending further proceedings while the other remains jailed.

Prosecutors expect to present the case to a grand jury Tuesday.
