Father Sentenced to 85 Years for Suffocating 5-Month-Old Daughter

Prosecutors said the girl's father repeatedly put his hand over her mouth to keep her from crying

A father has been sentenced to 85 years in prison for suffocating his infant daughter in their Roger's Park home.

Rigoberto Rodriguez, 31, was convicted last year for the death of 5-month-old Angelina Rodriguez, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Prosecutors said Rodriguez and the girl’s mother, 24-year-old Angela Petrov, were drinking Hennessy and listening to music when Angelina awoke in her playpen and started to cry.

Rodriguez repeatedly put his mouth over Angelina’s mouth to stop her from crying, according to prosecutors. The baby then stopped crying and her mother saw her body go limp, but did nothing.

Rodriguez then put the baby back into the playpen, and the couple had sex and went to sleep, prosecutors said.

The next morning, Rodriguez and Petrov found Angelina unresponsive and called 911. According to prosecutors, doctors at Lurie Children’s Hospital discovered the baby had previous fractures to her skull and a “blown pupil” from brain swelling and lack of oxygen.

The infant was taken off life support three days later, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Petrov has been convicted of murder and is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 17.
